چکیده

This study compared the voice quality of high and low falling unchecked and checked tones. Spectral tilt measured as H0A2 was taken from the syllable midpoint of second, third and four syllables in SVO sentences. Results showed that the voice quality of checked tones was not always creakier than unchecked tones. The voice quality of a syllable at the end of an utterance was not creakier than a syllable at the beginning of an utterance. Narrow focus was a salient factor affecting voice quality. While voice quality of narrow focus syllables became creakier, voice quality of post-focus syllables became more breathy. Focus, a prosodic factor, affected voice quality in a more consistent manner than did lexical tone and syllable position within an utterance in Taiwan Min (Taiwanese).

This study explored the voice quality of Taiwan Min checked tones 5 and 3 produced by speakers of varying ages from northern, central and southern Taiwan with Zhanzhou, Quanzhou and mixed accents. Comparison between spectral tilt (difference between H1*-H2* amplitudes) and closed quotients of the glottal wave form showed that checked tones with creaky / tense voice quality were distinguished fr...

Data were collected from Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, and mixed accents in northern, central, and southern Taiwan. Results showed that EGG parameters, Contact Quotients (CQ) and Peak Increase in Contact (PIC) were not effective in distinguishi...

Non-Contrastive Voice Quality Characteristics of Northern Vietnamese Tones

This study investigated non-contrastive voice qualities in Northern Vietnamese tones with a focus on huyền and hỏi. The analysis measured the relative amplitude of the first and second harmonics (H1-H2) and of the first harmonic and first formant (H1-A1) in a sample of native speaker speech. While the results are consistent with reports of multiple voice qualities for huyền and hỏi, huyền appea...

Glottalization and Taiwan Min checked tone sound change

This study investigates the glottalization of Taiwan Min checked tones with CV[p, t, k, ʔ] syllable structures. The results of Electroglottography (EGG) and acoustic measures showed that above 80% of [ʔ] and below 15% of [p, t, k] were deleted. Codas were most often realized as energy damping during the vowel final portion. Full stop closures were observed significantly more often among Tone 3 ...
